The European Union is a confederation of 27 member countries in Europe, started in 1957 as the European Economic Community ( EEC), It has created a common economic area with Europe – wide laws allowing people to move and trade in other EU countries almost like it was their own. Sixteen of these country also share the same currency: the euro.

The EU wants to deliver stability, peace and economic prosperity and raise standarts of living.

Its headquarters is in Brussels, Belgium.

 

HISTORY

The idea of union appeared after II World War to unite the nations of Europe economically and to prevent another war among them.

The first pillar was built in 1951 when France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg and Italy agreed to co-operate in the producion and trade of coal and steel.

The European Union was established in 1992 by the Maastricht Treaty.

The Czech Republic became a member of the EU in 2004.

 

GOAL

 

The goal was to create a common market with four freedoms:

  1. Free movement of goods
  2. Free movement of workers
  3. Free movement of services
  4. Free movement of capital

It means that there are open borders and there are no problems for goods and services, people and money to move freely among these countries.

 

INSTITUSION

Important institutions are:

ü  the European Parliament  – has 785 members, the seat of the parliament is in Strassbourg and Brussels

ü  The Council of the EU

ü  The European Commission

ü  The European Court of Justice

ü  The European Central Bank

 

SYMBOLS

FLAG – twelve golden stars on a background of blue sky, the twelve stars in a circle symbolizes the idea of unity, solidarity and harmony among the people of Europe

ANTHEM – is the final part of the Beethoven´s Ninth Symphony, sometimes called The Ode to Joy

EUROPE DAY – Europe Day is celebrated on 9 May

 

EURO – is the name of the European currency, euro makes it easier to travel and do business, and to compare prices.

ü  The los of national sovereignty

ü  Pressure on the quality of work

Euro – optimists:

ü  Support of culture, monuments, nature and Down

ü  Improve the prestige of the country
