Vzorový příklad řešení

I can see two pictures connected to the topic of Christmas and family life. In both pictures there are families celebrating Christmas. They all look happy and they are smiling, probably they are excited to be together and celebrate this beautiful part of the year.

In picture A, the people are sitting at a big table that is nicely decorated, for example with red candles.

Another symbol of Christmas and festive atmosphere is the Christmas tree in the background. The room looks really cosy. I can see nine people, some of them older, some younger – there is even a
small girl on the right. I guess they are grandparents with their grown-up children and grandchildren. Their clothes look nice, some are wearing red, men are wearing shirts. At the moment, they are holding a glass of Champagne, probably.

In picture B, I can see a street in a town or a bigger city. There are some houses, street lights and trees with snow on them which adds to the Christmas atmosphere. The family look very happy and cheerful and are laughing. The man is carrying his little girl on his back and the woman is carrying something wrapped, probably a Christmas present, and Christmas lights.

In picture A, the people are inside, probably in the living room, and are having Christmas dinner, while in picture B, the family are outside. I can see some snow in the background and Christmas lights on the woman´s shoulder, so I can say it´s Christmas time but I don´t know what day of Christmas it is.

Probably the family are going home from a walk or are going to buy their Christmas tree. In picture A, there are quite many people, on the other hand, in picture B there are just 3 family members – only the immediate family, mum, dad and a child. In picture A, the atmosphere is very festive, whereas in picture B, the atmosphere is more relaxed.

I would prefer to be in the second picture because the atmosphere looks really relaxed and I love spending Christmas time outside when there is snow and I am about to buy presents, meet my family and friends and enjoy the Christmas atmosphere.

Four million years ago, humans first walked on the Earth´s surface. We have a highly developed brain. We learn quickly and can plan for the future. We soon began to change the balance of the environment in our favour. (= v náš prospěch). The number of people on the Earth is growing each year making our environmental problems worse. The main ones are:

The main problems of developing countries.

Third World, or developing nations (rozvojové země), is a term we use to describe countries that aren’t as developed as those in Europe, the United States, Canada, etc. These countries share characteristics of widespread poverty (obecně rozšířená chudoba), high birth rates (vysoká porodnost), and undeveloped industry. Other problems include disease, hunger, lack of (nedostatek) education, and human rights issues.

Poverty

Poverty is a worldwide problem that produces, many other problems. Countries with a poor educational system often have poorer residents (obyvatele). People living in poverty often commit (páchají) crimes to support themselves or their families, which leads (vede k) to unsafe cities. Poor people don’t often have enough to eat, which leads to malnutrition (getting sick from not eating the right types of food) and starvation (hladovění, smrt hladem). Poor countries also may not have a good health care system (zdravotní pojištění), which leads to a population that is ill and has many diseases.

We see these problems in many African countries like Chad and Nigeria, as well as in Central American countries like Guatemala, South American and further in Brazil, Nepal, and countries closer to home like Romania.

Wars

Conflicts are happening around the world. We are all familiar with (být obeznámen s něčím) the problems in Afghanistan and Iraq. Unfortunately, many innocent civilians are being killed in the fighting or are forced to leave their homes for safer areas. We could see fighting between Israel and Lebanon in the Middle East, the area constantly troubled by the long-term Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

There are different reasons for war: sometimes two groups are fighting for control of a country and sometimes their dispute (konflikt, neshoda) is based on their religions (náboženství).

We’ve seen a rise (nárůst) in terrorist acts committed by people who believe they are defending their religion. The attacks in the US in September 2001and in Britain in July 2005 are two examples – but people in Indonesia, Spain, Israel and the Palestinian territories also have suffered (trpět, snášet něco) from terrorism.

Pollution

As the world population expands so does the amount of waste (odpad) people produce. While there are countries or regions that have invested heavily (výrazně, velmi mnoho) in modern waste-management technologies, innovative recycling and waste reduction programs, others have chronic problems with garbage.

We produce lots of waste in the home and toxic chemicals from industrial processes. These must be disposed (zbavite se) of safely. Chemicals are used to kill pests (škůdci) in agriculture, to increase (zvýšit) production. Toxic waste from industrial processes leaks (uniká) into our waterways. Toxic waste kills fish in rivers, lakes and the sea. Wastes getting into our drinking water or chemicals getting into our food cause illness and diseases.

Environmental issues

are a concern for everyone. They relate to (týkají se):

global warming, which is becoming a huge problem,

climate change (can lead to more frequent floods as well as catastrophic droughts)

too many cars on the roads,

companies that pollute the air and water with chemicals,

a consumer society that produces too much waste,

destruction of the ozone layer (ozónová vrstva) – all of this is of concern for people, animals and plants – and could soon affect the way we live.

the destruction of many forests, especially in South and Central American countries like Brazil and Costa Rica, means many animals and insects are becoming extinct (vyhynou, na pokraji vyhynutí) = cutting down rainforests which are considered to be the lungs of the Earth = deforestation (kácení lesů)

How can you help our environment?

Recycling is separating waste from home and reusing most of it. We should separate organic waste and reuse it in the garden compost, separate paper and cardboard (lepenka), glass and plastic bottles. There are recycling banks or bins (kontejnery na tříděný odpad) nearly everywhere.

We must all save more energy, which means to:

Switch off lights

Turn down the central heating

Insulate our houses

Reduce packaging on goods

Re-use items instead of buying new ones

Recycle to reduce waste

Think of future generations and encourage politicians to see the longer view

THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY

Greenhouse effect

A life on our planet depends of a thin layer of gases (tenká vrstva plynů), called the atmosphere. Like the mentioned transparent blanket, the atmosphere keeps the surface of the Earth warm. Without it the average temperature on Earth would be around minus 18°C. With this atmospheric blanket the average temperature is actually around plus 14 degrees Celsius.

The energy from the Sun, in the form of ultraviolet (ultrafialové) radiation streams in through (proniká skrz) the atmosphere and warms the surface of the Earth. In a similar way, the energy is reflected back out into space as infrared (infračervené) radiation, and absorbed by the gas molecules, which trap the heat inside, like in a greenhouse.

This is called the greenhouse effect.

Global warming

The earth has a thing atmosphere that is like a transparent blanket (průhledná pokrývka) that keeps us warm. In a process called the greenhouse effect high energy radiation from the solar system is trapped by gases such as carbon dioxide. (je zachycen plyny, jako například oxid uhličitý) This heat energy keeps Earth temperatures too high to support life. (příliš vysoké na udržení života) The causes (příčiny) are that carbon fossil fuels (fosilní paliva) such as coal (uhlí) are burnt to produce energy. This process produces large amount of carbon dioxide that goes into the atmosphere. More carbon dioxide means a larger greenhouse effect so the Earth´s overall (celková, globální) temperature is increasing. This could cause rising sea levels (stoupající hladiny moří), unpredictable weather (nevyzpytatelné počasí) in the form of flooding or drought, hurricanes and large loss of life.

Solution to (řešení) this problem is to change the way we produce energy and produce less carbon dioxide.

Drugs

Drugs are one of the most serious challenges young people face these days. Many classifications are possible but the one most frequently used is into soft and hard drugs.

Examples of soft drugs are: cigarettes, marijuana, hashish and also caffeine (present in tea of coffee).

Hard drugs are for example: heroine, cocaine, alcohol, diluters (ředidla), adhesives (lepidla), sedatives …

Symptoms of taking these drugs are varied: red eyes, tiredness (únava), slow reactions, sleepiness, joking, uncoordinated movements, constricted pupils (zúžené zornice).

The consequences (následky) may include: harm to the airways and lungs (poškození dýchacích cest a plic), brain or liver. Overdose (předávkování) may lead to death, too.

It is advisable to look for any change. Teenagers may start dressing or behaving in a new way, or even leave home suddenly. Also, he or she gets out of touch with their long-time friends and looks for new ones who have similar interests and face the same problems. Teenagers may often spend a lot of time locked away in the toilet or bathroom.

The question remains why people take drugs: it may just curiosity (zvědavost), boredom, or desire to be accepted into a specific group of people.

Famine and hunger

Some 795 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy active life. That’s about one in nine people on earth.

The vast majority of the world’s hungry people live in developing countries, where 12.9 percent of the population is undernourished (podvyživený).

Asia is the continent with the most hungry people – two thirds of the total. Sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the highest prevalence (percentage of population) of hunger. One person in four there is undernourished.

Poor nutrition causes nearly half (45%) of deaths in children under five – 3.1 million children each year.

One out of six children – roughly 100 million – in developing countries is underweight (mít podváhu).

One in four of the world’s children are stunted (nevyvinutý). In developing countries the proportion can rise to one in three.

If women farmers had the same access (přístup k) to resources as men, the number of hungry in the world could be reduced by up to 150 million.

66 million primary school-age children attend classes hungry across the developing world, with 23 million in Africa alone.
www.wfp.org/hunger/stats

Unemployment

Nowadays young people face quite a big problem finding a good job. It is not usually difficult to find a job, but if you want to work in your field (pracovat v oboru) and take advantage of the knowledge you gained at the university (využít znalostí, které člověk získal na univerzitě), then it is difficult. If people cannot find a job, they have to go and register at the job centre (úřad práce) and for very small monthly allowance (za velmi nízkou měsíční podporu) they have to wait till a suitable job appears.

It must be rather depressing to be on the dole (být na podpoře) because if nothing comes up you start to underestimate yourself (podceňovat se). I would probably go abroad and do any job rather than here, because, I would at least learn a foreign language. It is a good idea to take up a PC or driving course as it sounds more interesting to your possible employer (zaměstnavatel).
The post Global issues – otázka z angličtiny (4) first appeared on Anglictina-maturita.cz.

Geography, history, politics, important people

Geography

Norway is located on the Western part of Scandinavian peninsula and it neighbours with Sweden, Finland and Russia. It covers a total area of about 385 000 square kilometers.

It is surrounded by the Barents Sea (north), the Norwegian Sea and the North Sea (west) and the Skagerrak in the south.

Norway is divided into 11 administrative regions or counties. The regions are: Agder, Innlandet, More og Romsdal, Nordland, Oslo, Rogaland, Troms og Finnmark, Trondelag, Vestfold og Telemark, Vestlandet and Viken.

Norway’s capital city – Oslo – is located on the southern part of the peninsula. It is also the biggest city of the country, in the following place is Bergen.Norway mainly consists of mountains and wilderness and is a home to more than 300 mountain peaks over 2,000 metres tall. The word „Fjord“ comes from the Norse fjorðr, meaning to go, pass or cross over.

Politics

Norway is a constitutional monarchy with the king as its official head. The current king is King Harald V after his death his son Haakon Magnus will take the throne. Legislative power is in the hands of the parliament, which is elected for four years and cannot be dismissed. Executive power is in the hands of the Norwegian government headed by the Prime Minister. (fro explanation = The Legislature makes laws. The Executive puts those laws into effect and plans policy.) The King also stands at the head of the Church of Norway, is the Commander-in-Chief of the Norwegian Armed Forces.

Population, economy and education

Population

In 2020 Norway has reached about 5,4 million inhabitants. Here we can see a population graph on which we can see, that the number of inhabitants is increasing.

Economy

Norway is a developed industrial country. An important role, for Norway’s economy, has fishing, logging, oil and natural gas extraction, and other mineral resources. Above all, due to possible restrictions on oil production and fishing, Norway has repeatedly refused to join the EU. Norway is a large producer of relatively clean electricity, more than 99% of which is produced in hydroelectric power plants.

Languages

Norwegian in its two forms (which are Bokmål and Nynorsk) is the main official language of Norway. Sami, a group of three separate languages, is recognized as a minority language at the national level and is a co-official language alongside Norwegian in the Sami Administrative Language Region (located in northern Norway). Another language is, for example, the minority Kven language.

Religions

Even though Norway no longer has a state religion, the faith of the largest part of the population belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Norway – as we can see on this circle graph. Atheists make up the second largest part of this graph. Furthermore, Islam and the Catholic church are present almost equally. This unmarked pink field represents other Christian faiths. The last – light blue field represents other faiths such as Buddhism, Hinduism and the like.

Education

Public education is virtually free, regardless of nationality. Higher education in Norway is provided by seven universities, five specialized colleges, 25 university colleges, as well as countless private colleges.

I have prepared a presentation about Italy today.

Basic information:

Italy is in the southern Europe. It is known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and delicious food.

History:

Italy has a rich and complex history that dates back thousands of years. The country has been home to many different civilizations and empires, including the Etruscans, the Romans, and the Byzantines. Italy was a major centre of art, culture, and commerce during the Renaissance, and played an important role in the development of modern science and philosophy. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Italy experienced significant political and social upheavals, including the unification of the country under a single government and the rise of fascism under Benito Mussolini.

Geography:

Italy is a country that is located in southern Europe. It is bordered by France to the west, Switzerland and Austria to the north, and Slovenia to the east.
Italy has a Mediterranean climate, which means that it has mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. The country’s climate is influenced by its long coastline, which helps to moderate temperatures and create a mild, pleasant climate. Italy is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including Mediterranean shrubs and trees, such as olive trees and cypress trees. The country also has a diverse range of wildlife, including wolves, wild boar, and deer. Italy is known for its beautiful national parks, which are home to many of these animals, as well as rare plant species. Some of Italy’s most famous national parks include the Gran Paradiso National Park and the Cinque Terre National Park.

Politics:

Italy is a parliamentary republic, with a president who serves as the head of state and a prime minister who serves as the head of government. The country has a multi-party system, with several major political parties that represent a range of political views. Italian politics has been marked by instability in recent years, with frequent changes in government and a high degree of political polarization. Despite these challenges, Italy remains an important player in European and global politics and has been a member of the European Union since its start.

Economy:

Italy is the eighth-largest economy in the world and the third-largest economy in the European Union. The country has a diverse economy that is based on a mix of manufacturing, agriculture, and services. Some of Italy’s most important industries include fashion, automotive manufacturing, and food and wine production. Italy is also famous for its luxury goods, such as designer clothing and accessories. However, Italy has faced some economic challenges in recent years, including high levels of public debt and a low birth rate.

Population:

Italy has a population of approximately 60 million people. The country is the fifth-most populous country in Europe and has a relatively low birth rate. The population of Italy is concentrated in the northern and central regions of the country, with the largest cities being Rome, Milan, and Naples. Italy is known for its rich cultural heritage and has been home to many famous artists, writers, and musicians over the centuries. The country has a diverse population that includes people from many different ethnic and religious backgrounds.

Important people:

Otázka: Gothic Architecture

Jazyk: Angličtina

Přidal(a): Terkusa

Gothic architecture is a style that flourished in Europe during the High and Late Middle Ages, from the late 12th century to the 16th century. Gothic architecture is a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of medieval builders. Its impressive structures, innovative engineering, and artistic beauty have left a lasting legacy on the architectural world. Understanding Gothic architecture helps us appreciate the cultural and historical context of this remarkable style.

Let’s explore the origins, characteristics, and significance of Gothic architecture.

Origins of Gothic Architecture

Development:

Gothic architecture evolved from Romanesque architecture and was succeeded by Renaissance architecture.

It originated in the Île-de-France and Picardy regions of northern France in the early 12th century.

The style was initially known as „opus Francigenum“ (French work) and later termed „Gothic“ during the Renaissance as a pejorative term.

Early Examples:

The Abbey of Saint-Denis near Paris, reconstructed between 1140 and 1144, is considered the first Gothic building. It combined key Gothic elements like pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses.

Characteristics of Gothic Architecture

Pointed Arches:

The pointed arch is a defining feature of Gothic architecture. It allowed for the construction of taller and more stable structures compared to the rounded arches of Romanesque architecture.

Ribbed Vaults:

Ribbed vaults are another hallmark of Gothic design. They distribute the weight of the roof more efficiently, enabling the creation of larger and more complex interior spaces.

Flying Buttresses:

Flying buttresses are external supports that transfer the weight of the roof and walls away from the building, allowing for higher ceilings and thinner walls with large windows.

Stained Glass Windows:

Large stained glass windows are a prominent feature of Gothic cathedrals. They not only illuminate the interior with colorful light but also depict biblical stories and saints.

Verticality and Light:

Gothic architecture emphasizes verticality, with tall spires and towers reaching towards the heavens. The use of light, particularly through stained glass, creates a sense of divine presence and ethereal beauty.

Notable Examples of Gothic Architecture

Chartres Cathedral (France):

Known for its stunning stained glass windows and two contrasting spires, Chartres Cathedral is a masterpiece of High Gothic architecture.

Notre-Dame de Paris (France):

One of the most famous Gothic cathedrals, Notre-Dame features iconic flying buttresses, a large rose window, and intricate sculptures.

Cologne Cathedral (Germany):

This cathedral is renowned for its immense size and the tallest twin spires in the world. It took over 600 years to complete.

Westminster Abbey (England):

A prime example of English Gothic architecture, Westminster Abbey is known for its elaborate fan vaulting and historical significance as the coronation site of British monarchs.

Significance of Gothic Architecture

Cultural Impact:

Gothic architecture represents a significant period in European history, reflecting the religious fervor and artistic achievements of the Middle Ages.

Many Gothic cathedrals are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, recognized for their historical and architectural importance.

Engineering Innovations:

The structural innovations of Gothic architecture, such as the pointed arch and flying buttress, influenced the development of later architectural styles and engineering techniques.

Aesthetic Influence:

The aesthetic principles of Gothic architecture, with its emphasis on height, light, and intricate detail, continue to inspire modern architects and designers.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to draw your attention to lacks in service quality, food and the terrible behavior I was met with when I complained to one of your employees.

Firstly, in the matter of effectivity of your services there is a lot of space for improvement. Despite your claim of fast service, I had to wait almost half an hour just to be served badly cooked cheeseburger with fries.

Secondly, as I previously mentioned, the quality of the food I ordered was not at all what I expected. Although you advertise “delicious food” I was served a cheeseburger that could almost still get up and go eat grass behind the restaurant. As if that could not be enough, the fries that came with it were half frozen.

To make matters worse, when I tried to complain to the supervisor, I got nothing but rudeness back. He even insisted on my paying for the meal.

I feel that I am entitled to a full refund, and I trust that the issue with one of your employees can be dealt with promptly.

Yours faithfully,

Stonehenge is one of the most famous prehistoric monuments in the world. Located on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, it has fascinated people for centuries. Its construction, purpose, and significance continue to captivate researchers and visitors alike. Understanding Stonehenge helps us appreciate the ingenuity and cultural achievements of our ancestors.

Let’s explore its history, construction, and significance:

History of Stonehenge

Early Construction:

The earliest phase of Stonehenge dates back to around 3100 BC. It began as a circular earthwork enclosure, known as a henge, with a ditch and bank.

The site was used for ceremonial purposes and underwent several phases of construction over the next 1500 years.

Stone Circles:

Around 2600 BC, the iconic sarsen stones were erected. These large stones, some weighing up to 25 tons, were transported from the Marlborough Downs, about 20 miles away.

The smaller bluestones, weighing up to 4 tons, were brought from the Preseli Hills in Wales, over 150 miles away. These stones were arranged in a double circle within the larger sarsen circle.

Later Modifications:

Stonehenge continued to be modified and used for various purposes until about 1600 BC. The exact reasons for these changes remain a topic of research and debate.

Construction Techniques

Transporting the Stones:

The transportation of the massive stones is one of the most remarkable aspects of Stonehenge. It is believed that the stones were moved using a combination of sledges, rollers, and waterways.

Erecting the Stones:

The stones were erected using a sophisticated system of mortise and tenon joints, which allowed the horizontal lintel stones to be securely placed on top of the vertical sarsens.

The precise alignment of the stones suggests advanced knowledge of astronomy and engineering.

Significance of Stonehenge

Astronomical Alignment:

Stonehenge is aligned with the movements of the sun. The most famous alignment is with the sunrise on the summer solstice and the sunset on the winter solstice.

This alignment indicates that Stonehenge may have been used as a calendar or for ceremonial purposes related to the changing seasons.

Burial Site:

Archaeological evidence suggests that Stonehenge was used as a burial ground from its earliest phases. Human remains have been found in and around the site, dating back to 3000 BC.

Cultural Importance:

Stonehenge is considered a British cultural icon and has been a legally protected scheduled monument since 1882.

It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, recognizing its significance as part of the cultural heritage of humanity.

Modern-Day Stonehenge

Tourism:

Stonehenge attracts over a million visitors each year. The site is managed by English Heritage, which provides educational resources and guided tours.

Visitors can explore the visitor center, which includes exhibitions about the history and significance of Stonehenge.

Research:

Ongoing archaeological research continues to uncover new information about Stonehenge and its surrounding landscape. Recent discoveries have provided insights into the lives of the people who built and used the monument.
