My favourite visual artist is Neri Oxman. I know about her since I saw some documentary short film and I felt in love with her art. She is an American-Israel designer and professor at the MIT Media lab which is so amazing. She is a leader to the Mediated Matter research group. She is known for art and architecture that combine design, biology, computing, and materials engineering.
She coined the phrase „material ecology“ to define her work, placing materials in context. Stylistic trademarks include brightly coloured and textured surfaces with structure at many scales, and composite materials whose hardness, colour, and shape vary over an object. The results are often designed to be worn or touched, and inspired by nature and biology.
She was born and raised in Haifa, Israel. Her both parents are Architects and her mother is a professor too, but in the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. Her younger sister is an artist too.
The work of art from her I like the most is “project Aguahoja”. She said this about that: “This project points towards a future where we subvert the industrial cycle of overproduction and obsolescence through the use of abundant natural materials. Through this project we envision the ability to temporarily divert materials from healthy ecosystems, to integrate them in human designs, and to enable natural decomposition back into the environment for purposes of fuelling new growth.
By enabling digital design and fabrication with biopolymers, we aim to devise systems that incentivize the protection and strengthening of ecosystems while also providing humans with a new frontier of design and production.”
I absolutely love what she is doing and I have some thoughts that I will go to biology/science school and become helpful to our planet as she is. But when I was at high school, I really liked chemistry and biology but I never thought about to connecting art with it, so I decided that I will go to Art school and I left that behind me. She shows me that it is possible to connect these two things and work with all knowledge that I had from high school.
She also give me motivation to learn something new and such inspiration.
