NEW YORK – “The city that never sleeps”
The largest city in the USA and the city of extremes. It is the most populous city of the USA. New York is also a city of skyscrapers, theatres, cinemas, museums, galleries, shops and hotel for the well-to-do for the rich people and also one of the centres of organized crime, a city with ugly slums for the poor people.
In New York live more than 8, 5 million people who speak 170 different languages. New York´s nickname is A BIG APPLE.
New York is situated in the north of east coast in America, on the river Hudson, there are also East and Harlem Rivers.
NY consists of 5 boroughs – they are:
Manhattan – Times Square, Empire State buildings, Central Park, 5th Avenue, Grand Central Terminal, Statue of Liberty, Chinatown, Ellis Island …..
Brooklyn – Coney Island
Queens – JF Kennedy Airport, tennis US open – Flushing Meadows
The Bronx – Yankee Stadium, Bronx ZOO – the biggest in the world, rap and hip hop was born there
Staten Island – Staten Island ferry to Manhattan, Statue of Liberty
History:
The area was inhabited by Indians, which is resembled by the name of the oldest part – Manhattan Island. This island was bought from the Indians by the Dutch in 1625. The original name was New Amsterdam. In 1644 was renamed it New York. New York is famous for its Manhattan skyline – a large number of skyscrapers on a small area. They started to build skyscrapers here because of the lack of space and the high price of land on the island. First skyscrapers were built here in 1903 and 1913. Beautiful and interesting skyscrapers in New York are The World Trade Centre, Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Citicorp Centre, and Pan Am Building.
