New York is the biggest city in the USA. The number of inhabitants is about 18 million. It belongs to the largest cities in the world. It is sometimes called “The Big Apple”. New York has five major parts: Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island (Richmond) and Brooklyn. The black quarter – Harlem – is in northern part of Manhattan.
The original inhabitants were Indians, which is remembered by the name of the oldest part – Manhattan Island. This island was bought by the Dutch in 17th century. The original name was New Amsterdam.In 1664 New Amsterdam became an English colony and the town was renamed to New York. In 1789 New York became the capital of the United States for two years. In southern part of Manhattan there used to be a wall against Indians, now there is Wall Street – the center of financial life.
New York has five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island (Richmond).
Queens – It is the largest borough. Queens is known for its numerous and enormous cemeteries.
Brooklyn – It is the most popular borough. It is the home of the Brooklyn Museum, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Botanic Garden.
Staten Island – It is mostly family houses.
The Bronx – It is one of the biggest Afro-American communities. There is Yankee Stadium.
Manhattan – Its scenery is formed by skyscrapers (the Empire State Building). It is the center of cultural life and the center of trade. It is the most important.
The city was built on a modern plan of streets and avenues, which are numbered. Streets run east-west and avenues north-south. Only a few of them have their names, e. g. Wall Street, Broadway. Broadway is the center of cultural life. There is concentrated most of entertainment (e. g. Metropolitan Opera or Carnage Hall). The island is washed by the Hudson River and the East River. East Village is a center of many ethnic restaurants, boutiques and jazz clubs. Greenwich Village is the home of artists.
New York is an important industrial city and businesscenter. New York City has 3 main airports: J. F. Kennedy International Airport, Newark International Airport and La Guardian Airport. New York has the largest subway system in the world; it has about 700 km and 500 stations. So, for traveling in the city you can use metro, railroads, more expensive cab and so on.
New York is famous for its Manhattan skyline – a large number of skyscrapers on a small area. They started to built skyscrapers here because the price of land on the island was very high. The first skyscraper was built in 1903. Today they are built with the help of computers. In the fact the skyscrapers are small towns. We can find here residential quarters, offices, parking lots, restaurants, shops, fitness centres, swimming pool. Living here is very expensive.
The highest skyscraper in New York is The World Trade Center. It was built in 1973 and has 110 floors and more than 100 000 people come and go here every day. Another interesting skyscraper in N. Y. is Empire State Building. It has 102 floors and a TV tower and a restaurant at the top. There are also many others – e. g. Chrysler Building, PanAm Building and UN building.
Harlem – is a black quarter with many poor and unemployment people.
Time square – is a centre of entertainment, there are situated department stores, restaurants, nightclubs and hotels.
Broadway – it´s more than 19km long, there are 33 theatres (like Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall), cinemas, restaurants, clubs and bars
Chinatown, Little Italy
Rockefeller Center is a complex of 14 buildings. Rockefeller center is world´s largest business and entertainment center. There is many restaurants, travel agencies, shops, offices and also have small garden. And the part of RC are RCA and Radio city hall – this is the big cinema and there show new films. Almost opposite Rockefeller Center stands St. Patrick’s Cathedral. It was inspired by the great Gothic cathedrals in Europe.. It´s center of Irish tradition. At Easter people go up and down in the 5 avenue.
The most known bridge is the Brooklyn Bridge.
The only quiet place is Central Park where famous rock concerts take place. We can there relaxing by walking or jogging.
There are many attractive places where visitors like to go in New York. The most known bridge is the Brooklyn Bridge. There are many islands in this area – Roosevelt Island, Coney Island and Liberty Island with the Statue of Liberty (The Statue of Liberty is on Liberty Island in New York harbor (The Lady has torch in her right hand and the Declaration of Independence in her left hand) and it was the gift from France to the people of the USA in 1886. It is a symbol of hope and freedom.
Madison Square Garden is the most popular sport center in NY.
