I would like to speak about Canada. At first I would like to tell you something about geography and population. The second part will be about history and the third part about political system, sport and interesting places in Canada.
Geography
Canada is situated in northern part of North America. It covers more than half of the North American continent and a number of islands – such as Baffin Island, New Foundland and someone else. It is the second largest country in the world. Its total area is nearly 10 million km2. The capital city is Ottawa. Canada consists of 10 provinces and 3 territories (Provinces: Quebec, Ontario, Alberta… Territories: Yukon, Nunavut and Northwest Territories). Canada has one of the biggest islands in the world – Baffin Island. The longest river is Mackenzie.
On board with the USA are the biggest lakes: Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Then there are also two big lakes in the south: Great Bear Lake and Great Slave Lake. In the north-west is the highest mountain Mt. Logan situated in the Rocky Mountains.
It is a part of Commonwealth.
Population
It has only about 34 million people so its population density is very low. It is low because of the bad weather – it is situated in Arctic area. Near 70% inhabitants live in the south – around160 kmfrom the USA’s borders. About 45% are British origin. Near 30% of inhabitants are French-speaking and about 20% are European origin (Germans, Dutch…). The original inhabitants of Canada were Indians and Eskimos. They have two official languages: English and French. Its national sport is lacrosse. There is also very popular ice hockey.
Climate
Canada’s climate is very changeable and cold. It is influenced by its mountains – keep of cold air.
History
The original inhabitants came to Canada about 16 000 to 25 000 years ago from Asia. Canada was „discovered“ twice, first by the Vikings more than a thousand years ago then by Europeans in the 15th century. The first colony was created by France around St. Lawrence River. Then it was taken by British and it was formed to two colonies: Upper Canada and Lower Canada. “The Canada’s” were in 1841 formed into United Province of Canada. In 1982 Canada made independent and got name Canada. Canada became a British dominion in 1867.
Political system, Government
Federal state and a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations. The head of state is UK’s Queen. She is represented by the Governor General. The head of government is Prime Minister. It is federal multiparty parliamentary state with two legislative houses – Senate and House of Commons. Its currency is Canadian dollar. Its national anthem is “O Canada”.
Flag
Their flag has one white strip in the middle and two red strips marginal. There is red maple leaf in the middle of the white strip.
The capital city of Canada is Ottawa. The biggest city is Toronto. Other large cities are Montreal, Vancouver, Edmonton, Hamilton, Quebec.
Montreal lies in Quebec and it is the second largest French speaking city after Paris, capital city of France.
