  • I live in Liberec, Czech Republic.
  • Liberec is the 5th largest city in the Czech Republic and the largest town in the Liberec region.
  • It is located in the northern part of Bohemia.
  • The population is about 150,000 inhabitants.
  • Liberec is divided into 35 parts, for example, Horní and Dolní Hanychov, Vratislavice, Růžodol, Rochlice, Františkov, and Harcov.

 

HISTORY

  • It was established in the 13th century.
  • It developed rapidly at the end of the 19th century, as many buildings were built, such as the Town Hall, the North Bohemian Museum, and the F.X. Šalda Theatre.
  • In the 1920s, it became the most important city for Germans in Czechoslovakia.
  • It joined Nazi Germany in 1938.
  • After the Second World War, Germans had to leave Liberec, and the region was resettled by Czechs as it became part of Czechoslovakia again.

 

GEOGRAPHY

  • The city is surrounded by the Jizera Mountains.
  • The highest peak is Ještěd.
  • The most significant river is the Nisa.
  • The biggest dams are Liberec Dam, Harcov, and Rudolfov.

 

PRODUCTION

  • Liberec used to be a huge textile producer as well as a food producer of popular sweets called LIPO.
  • Car components and glass products are manufactured there.

  • You can practice cross-country or downhill skiing in the Ještěd ski resort.
  • Hiking and cycling are also very popular for Czechs and tourists.
  • Liberec is home to the FC Slovan football club and the White Tigers ice hockey club.

  • Liberec offers many educational institutions, such as public and private primary and secondary schools, grammar schools, vocational schools, art schools, and one university called the Technical University of Liberec. It offers many specializations in mechanical engineering, architecture, art, economy, and education.

  • The Botanical Garden and Zoo, which is the only zoo in the Czech Republic that has white tigers, offers entertaining tours for families.
  • Also popular are the Town Hall and the F.X. Šalda Theatre, which has the main curtain designed by Gustav Klimt.
