The United States of America is a country composed of 50 states. At 9,8 million km2 and with over 324 million people, the United States is the world’s third-largest country by total area. The national flag consists of 50 white stars on a blue canton with a field of 13 alternating stripes, 7 red and 6 white. The national anthem is called The Star-Spangled Banner. The United States is a federal republic. The president of the United States is Barack Obama. Two political parties, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, dominates. The federal government is composed of three distinct branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. The Vice President is the second-highest official in rank of the federal government.
Major geographical zones
The USA has 4 regions (Northeast, Midwest, South and West) and 9 divisions. Every region has some divisions.
In the Northeast there are 2 divisions – New England and Mid-Atlantic and there are located states like Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York. The Northeastern region is the nation’s most economically developed, densely populated, and cultural region.
Two divisions belongs to the region Midwest. There are East North Central and West North Central. The most popular states are Michigan, Ohio, Kansas or Minnesota in this region. In the Midwest dominates agriculture. The area consists of some of the richest farming land in the world.
The next region is South. There are three divisions – South Atlantic, East South Central and West South Central. We can find states like Florida, Washington D.C., North and South Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Texas here. American football is the most popular team sport in most areas of the South.
And the last one region is West. West has two divisions and these are Mountain and Pacific. There are located states like Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Alaska, California, Hawaii and so on. The Western U.S. is the largest region of the country. It is also the most geographically diverse, including geographic regions such as the Pacific Coast, the temperate rainforests of the Northwest, the highest mountains (the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada).
Major cities and urban centres
The most populous city in the United States is New York. The city has about 8 and half milion people. L.A. is the second-largest city in the United States after New York City, the most populous city in California. The population in Los Angeles is about 4 milion people. Chicago is the third-most populous city in the United States. With over 2.7 million residents, it is the most populous city in the state of Illinois and the Midwestern United States. To the top 10 major cities belongs states like Miami, Philadelphia, Dallas, Houston, Washington, Atlanta and Boston.
Major rivers
The longest river is Missouri which is 3 768 km long. The second biggest river is Mississippi which is long about 3 500 km. But there are many others dominant river like Yukon, Rio Grande, Colorado River, Arkansas River, Columbia River, Red River, Snake River or Ohio River. Everyone is more like 1 500 km long.
National Parks
There are located 59 National Parks in the United States. The most famous is Yellowstone which has a number of scenic waterfalls, and four mountain ranges run through the park. Death Valley in California is the hottest and driest place in the United States. The national park Denali is around the highest mountain in North America, it is located in Alaska. Amerika has many mountains like Mount Saint Elias, Mount Rainer, Mount Whitney, Longs Peak etc.
The Great Lakes are a series of freshwater lakes located primarily in the upper midwest region of North America (Lake Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario)
Demography distribution
The United States has a total resident population of 324,707,000, making it the third most populous country in the world. California and Texas are the most populous states and New York City is the most populous city in the United States. About 40% of nation’s population live on the coasts.
Neighbours
The United States shares international land borders with two states: Canada and Mexico. On the east is Atlantic ocean and on the west is Pacific ocean. In the USA lives 11 milion ilegal immigrants.
Economy
The U.S. dollar is the currency most used in international transactions. The U.S. is the world’s largest producer of oil and natural gas. And it is the world’s second largest manufacturer. Also agriculture is on the high level. They grows corn, soya, winter wheat, oat, sugar beet, cotton, citrus fruits. The most industry cities are Boston, Washington D.C. and Chicago. The characteristic of industry is mettalirgy iron. Also chemical production, engineering and car manufacture are very dominant in this country. And about services the most important is banking. There is also film production in Hollywood. Americans has high quality health care but very expensive. There are many people who don’t have a health insurance becouse incurance companies desides who could have the health insurance.
