Storyline:

This book tells us a story about great love, acceptance of inevitable, and the stars in our minds. Hazel Grace is a 16-year old girl who fights cancer in her lungs she frequently attends support group at her parent’s request. They fear that she would be devoured by loneliness and self-pity. One evening comes a 17-year old boy named Augustus Waters to their gathering who lost his leg due to illness he suffers from – osteosarcoma. He accompanies his friend Isaac who has eye cancer. After the meeting, Augustus approaches Hazel and they take an immediate liking for each other.

They go to Augustus’ house to watch a movie. They get to talk about their favourite books and Hazel immediately starts talking about An Imperial Affliction which she read countless-times. This book is so important to Hazel because the main character named Anna also suffers from cancer and lives her life pretty similarly to Hazel. Augustus gives her a book called The Prince of Dawn.

Augustus soon finds out that the storyline of An Imperial Affliction ends in the middle of a sentence (, which means she either died or became too sick to continue telling the story). Hazel explains the novel’s author had retreated following the novel’s publication and has not been heard from since.

A week later, Augustus reveals to Hazel that he was able to contact Van Houten’s (the author of An Imperial Affliction) assistant. Hazel immediately asks the author if he could tell her how the story ends. He refuses to tell her via email or phone, the only option is to tell her in person. That would require Hazel and Augustus to go to Amsterdam which regarding their financial situation they can’t afford.

A few days later, Augustus surprises Hazel with plane tickets (that he gets as his Wish /Make A Wish foundation which offers to fulfil the dying wish of any one person suffering from life- threatening diseases/)

On the plane to Amsterdam, Augustus confesses his love for Hazel. The meeting with Van Houten didn’t meet their expectations due to the author’s awful behaviour caused by alcohol. Lidewij, horrified by Van Houten’s actions, resigns as his assistant and takes Hazel and Augustus to go to the Anne Frank House, where Augustus and Hazel share their first kiss.

After they come back from their trip, Augustus conveys to Hazel that his cancer has returned. Augustus’ health is getting worse and worse every minute and later he ends up in the ICU for a few days.

Augustus dies soon after. Hazel is heartbroken. The funeral is planned for Saturday five days after his death. Van Houten shows up at the funeral to apologize for his previous behaviour back in Amsterdam.

Hazel finds out that Augustus was writing a sequel to An Imperial Affliction. He addressed a letter to Van Houten asking him to rewrite his thoughts so Hazel could read it. He did not change anything. The sequel states that getting hurt in this world is inevitable, but that we do get to choose whom we allow to hurt us and that he is happy with his choice, and hopes she likes hers too.

She does.

Resumé:

This book is quite easy to read but has a powerful message in every chapter. I think that in the future I will come back to it and read it again. As Hazel did with An Imperial Affliction.
