Fruit Volcano

What We Will Need:

  • 2 lemons
  • Smaller knife
  • Cutting board
  • Teaspoon
  • Smaller tray or plate
  • 2-3 teaspoons of baking soda
  • Food coloring
  • A few drops of detergent (optional)

Process:

  1. Take the lemons and roll them a little on the table to release the juice inside.
  2. Cut off one tip of the lemon so that it is flat. This will help the lemon stand well on the tray. Try not to cut into the pulp of the lemon, as the volcano could leak.
  3. Subsequently, cut off the other side of the lemon, this time cutting off a larger part. This is our volcano now! Repeat with both lemons.
  4. Cut out some pulp with a knife and remove the excess pulp with a spoon.
  5. Drip a few drops of detergent and food coloring onto the pulp in the lemon to make the volcano more cheerful and lively.
  6. Now comes the most important part of the whole experiment. We are activating the volcano! Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda to the lemon.
  7. The principle is the reaction of citric acid and sodium bicarbonate, during which carbon dioxide gas is released.

Lava Lamp

Ingredients:

  • Tall, narrow glass (e.g., from olives)
  • 1 dcl of water
  • Food coloring
  • 2 dcl of oil
  • Effervescent tablet or aspirin

Process:

  1. Pour oil into 2/3 of the glass.
  2. Add water.
  3. Color the water with food coloring.
  4. Gradually drop the effervescent tablet into the glass.

Inflatable Balloon

Ingredients:

  • Balloon
  • 50 g of baking soda
  • 1 dcl of vinegar
  • Smaller PET bottle (approx. 0.5 l)
  • Small funnel

Process:

  1. First, take a balloon and fill it with baking soda using a funnel.
  2. Pour vinegar into a smaller PET bottle.
  3. Thread the balloon over the bottle’s neck.
  4. Hold tightly to the edge and pour the contents into the bottle. A reaction starts to take place in the plastic bottle because baking soda and vinegar were used, producing carbon dioxide.
