The oldest literary work of the English literature is Beowulf, an old English poem about historical events in Denmark in the first half of the 6th century.(The hero Beowulf killed the monster Grendel. He became a king and ruled for 50 years. Then he fought with another monster and died.
The amazing author of the Middle Ages is Geoffrey Chaucer, with his Canterbury Tales.
William Shakespeare (1564-1616 Stradford)
- The greatest dramatist of England. He lived and worked in the 16th century in the period
of the Renaissance - In 1594 he became in important member of Lord Chamberlain’s Men.This company had built their own theatre called the Globe. Many of Shakespeare’s greatest plays were acted there. He performed for Elizabeth l and James l
- He wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets
- The most famous are Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and Othello. All of these are tragedies, mainly about love. He wrote comedies too. For example A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Much Ado About Nothing and The Taming of the Shrew
Other significant english dramatists were Oscar Wilde (The Importance of being Earnest) or George Bernard Shaw (Pygmalion)

- Charles Dickens, whose books were made into films – Oliver Twist, David Copperfield
English literature is known for excellent detective stories – Agatha Christie
