The lifestyle of young people today is shaped by various factors, including technology, social trends, and global events. Understanding their interests, challenges, and the impact of technology helps us appreciate the complexities of their lives and the ways they navigate the modern world.

Let’s explore the key aspects of their lifestyle.

Interests and Activities

Technology and Social Media:

Young people are the first generation to grow up with smartphones and social media. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat are integral to their daily lives.

Social media is used for communication, entertainment, and self-expression. It allows young people to connect with peers and share their experiences.

Hobbies and Leisure:

Popular hobbies include gaming, watching movies and TV shows, listening to music, and participating in sports.

Many young people are also interested in creative activities such as photography, art, and writing.

Education and Career:

Education is a significant focus for young people, with many pursuing higher education to achieve their career goals.

There is a growing interest in fields like technology, environmental science, and social justice.

Challenges

Mental Health:

Mental health is a major concern for young people. Issues such as anxiety, depression, and stress are prevalent.

The pressure to succeed academically and socially can contribute to mental health challenges.

Economic Uncertainty:

Young people face economic challenges, including job insecurity and the high cost of living.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated these issues, leading to concerns about future career prospects.

Social Issues:

Young people are increasingly aware of and engaged in social issues such as climate change, racial equality, and gender rights.

They often participate in activism and advocacy to promote positive change.

Impact of Technology

Digital Natives:

Young people are considered digital natives, having grown up with technology as an integral part of their lives.

They are adept at using digital tools for learning, communication, and entertainment.

Online Communities:

Online communities provide a sense of belonging and support. Young people can connect with others who share similar interests and experiences.

These communities can be a source of positive influence but also pose risks such as cyberbullying and misinformation.

Health and Well-being:

Technology has both positive and negative impacts on health. While it provides access to information and resources, excessive screen time can affect physical and mental health.

Young people are encouraged to balance their online and offline activities to maintain overall well-being.

Otázka: Instructions for Fun Science Experiments

Přidal(a): Ondřej Malý

Fruit Volcano

What We Will Need:

2 lemons

Smaller knife

Cutting board

Teaspoon

Smaller tray or plate

2-3 teaspoons of baking soda

Food coloring

A few drops of detergent (optional)

Process:

Take the lemons and roll them a little on the table to release the juice inside.

Cut off one tip of the lemon so that it is flat. This will help the lemon stand well on the tray. Try not to cut into the pulp of the lemon, as the volcano could leak.

Subsequently, cut off the other side of the lemon, this time cutting off a larger part. This is our volcano now! Repeat with both lemons.

Cut out some pulp with a knife and remove the excess pulp with a spoon.

Drip a few drops of detergent and food coloring onto the pulp in the lemon to make the volcano more cheerful and lively.

Now comes the most important part of the whole experiment. We are activating the volcano! Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda to the lemon.

The principle is the reaction of citric acid and sodium bicarbonate, during which carbon dioxide gas is released.

Lava Lamp

Ingredients:

Tall, narrow glass (e.g., from olives)

1 dcl of water

Food coloring

2 dcl of oil

Effervescent tablet or aspirin

Process:

Pour oil into 2/3 of the glass.

Add water.

Color the water with food coloring.

Gradually drop the effervescent tablet into the glass.

Inflatable Balloon

Ingredients:

Balloon

50 g of baking soda

1 dcl of vinegar

Smaller PET bottle (approx. 0.5 l)

Small funnel

Process:

First, take a balloon and fill it with baking soda using a funnel.

Pour vinegar into a smaller PET bottle.

Thread the balloon over the bottle’s neck.

Hold tightly to the edge and pour the contents into the bottle. A reaction starts to take place in the plastic bottle because baking soda and vinegar were used, producing carbon dioxide.

In today’s world, we face many challenges that affect our lives and the planet. These problems are complex and require our attention and action. Here are some of the major issues.

Climate Change

Climate change refers to long-term changes in temperature and weather patterns. It is mainly caused by human activities like burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes.

Effects:

Rising temperatures: Global warming leads to hotter weather.

Extreme weather: More frequent and severe storms, floods, and droughts.

Melting ice caps: Polar ice is melting, causing sea levels to rise.

Solutions:

Reduce carbon emissions: Use renewable energy sources like solar and wind power.

Plant trees: Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air.

Conserve energy: Use energy-efficient appliances and reduce waste.

Pollution

Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances into the environment. It can be in the form of air, water, or soil pollution.

Effects:

Health problems: Pollution can cause respiratory diseases, heart problems, and other health issues.

Environmental damage: It harms wildlife and ecosystems.

Water contamination: Polluted water is unsafe for drinking and can kill aquatic life.

Use clean energy: Avoid burning fossil fuels.

Clean up efforts: Participate in community clean-up activities.

Poverty

Poverty is the state of having little or no money and few or no material possessions. It affects millions of people worldwide.

Effects:

Lack of basic needs: People in poverty often lack food, clean water, shelter, and healthcare.

Education barriers: Children in poverty may not have access to education.

Social issues: Poverty can lead to crime, violence, and social instability.

Solutions:

Support education: Provide access to quality education for all children.

Create jobs: Develop programs to create employment opportunities.

Provide aid: Support organizations that help people in need.

Inequality

Inequality refers to the unequal distribution of resources and opportunities among people. It can be based on race, gender, income, and other factors.

Effects:

Social division: Inequality can lead to discrimination and social tension.

Limited opportunities: People from disadvantaged groups may have fewer chances to succeed.

Economic disparity: A large gap between the rich and the poor.

Solutions:

Promote equality: Ensure equal rights and opportunities for everyone.

Support diversity: Encourage inclusive practices in workplaces and communities.

Advocate for change: Support policies that address inequality.

Problems in the Czech Republic

What are they?

Effects:

High inflation affects the cost of living and purchasing power.

Dependence on external energy sources can lead to vulnerabilities.

Lack of long-term consensus on key policies can hinder progress.

Solutions:

Implement policies (Economic reforms) to stabilize the economy and control inflation.

Invest in renewable energy and diversify energy sources. It means energy independence.

Foster cooperation among political parties to achieve long-term goals and political stability.

Téma: Travel offices and travel agencies

Jazyk: Angličtina

Přidal(a): Anonym

The origins are connected with an epic travel that an English businessman Thomas Cook organized to take over 500 people by train from Derby to Rugby. The aim of the group trip was to go to protest at an anti-alcohol event… It was around 1841.

Then 4 years later in 1845 he started his first travel office in the world and 30 years later he had branches all over the world. His first mass travel abroad was to organize over 150 thousand people to go to Paris by train for a Great Exhibition.

Thomas Cook came up with tools which are still used today, for example:

A voucher

An itinerary

A contract

The first Czech travel office started in 1920, it became Čedok in 1926, it was a private office back then after WW2 it became national. Since 2016 it is owned by a Polish company Itaka.

Differences between a travel office and travel agency:

A travel office

Sells the product that they themselves create. They do not sell anybody else´s packages (transport, accommodation, good, guide), they sell only their own creations and are in chargé of all holiday. Tour operators look into all aspects of a holiday, they plan almost each and everything. In the Czech Republic are for example Čedok, Alexandria, Blue Style…)

A travel agency

Helps anyone plan their trips, whether it’s individuals, families, or businesses. Independent businesses that focus solely on providing travel services. Offers a wide range of travel services to the general public, including booking flights, hotels, and tours. Aims to make money by selling travel services and earning commissions. Typically regulated by government authorities to ensure consumer protection. In the Czech Republic for example Inviaa, Zájezdy.cz….

In essence, a travel office helps manage travel for a specific group, like employees, within an organization, while a travel agency offers travel services to anyone who needs them.

Last minute

Refers to booking travel arrangements, such as flights or accommodations, shortly before the intended departure date. Travel agencies or websites often offer last-minute deals for those who are flexible and willing to book spontaneously.

First minute

This term is often used in the travel industry to promote early booking discounts. Travel agencies or websites may offer special deals for travellers who book their trips well in advance, sometimes even a year or more ahead of the departure date. These early booking incentives can include discounted fares, room upgrades, or other perks.

Working in a Travel Office:

A travel office is usually found within a larger organization, like a company or a school. People working here help arrange travel for the organization’s employees or members. Their job is to book flights, hotels, and rental cars, and make sure everything runs smoothly for travellers. They have to follow the organization’s rules and budgets, and often work closely with other departments, like finance, to manage expenses.

The clients in a travel office are limited to the people within the organization. This means they have a smaller group to focus on, and they need to make sure everyone’s needs are met efficiently.

Working in a Travel Agency:

On the other hand, a travel agency is an independent business that helps anyone plan their trips. This could be individuals, families, or even other businesses. People working in a travel agency have a broader range of clients to serve, which means they need to be adaptable and good at understanding different people’s needs.

In a travel agency, you’ll be booking flights, hotels, and tours for clients, but you’ll also be involved in sales and marketing. You might need to promote special deals or packages to attract new clients. And since you’re working independently, you have more freedom to negotiate with vendors and find the best deals for your clients.
The post Travel offices and travel agencies first appeared on Anglictina-maturita.cz.

History

Basketball is team sport that was invented in the year 1891 by Canadian-American gym teacher James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts, United States. He wanted to condition students and keep them indoor during winter.

There were only thirteen rules of „basketball“.

Now, basketball is one of the world’s most popular sports.

First international game was held in year 1952 in Saint Petersburg.

Real international organization, that organise competitions and define rules is FIBA. It was formed in year 1932.

First Olympic games, where the basketball was played, were in year 1936 in Berlin.

First World Championship was played in year 1950 in Argentina.

Rules 5×5

Basketball is team sport, where two teams play against each other on the indoor court. The goal is to throw the ball to the defender’s basket, which is 3,05 m above the floor.

Basket could have 3 different values – behind the 3-point line – 3 points, inside 3 point line – 2points and free throw – 1 point. Free throw throws the player who was fouled during shot.

After five fouls player must leave the game (6 fouls in NBS).

Ball is made of leather and men has size 7, woman size 6, and children under 14 years play with size 5.

Each team has five players on court and 7 on the bench. Each team is managed by the coach.

Each team can substitute one or all players while the time is stopped.

Game is divided into 4 periods and each period has 10 minutes (12 in NBA).

Team, who has more points at the end of the game, wins. If the score is tied, there is an extra time for 5 minutes.

The limit for attack is 24 seconds and if the team is not able to shoot, them loses the pall possession.

Rules 3 x 3

Three ex three basketball is very old format long played in streets and gyms across the world.

First official competitions started in late 2000’s and for the first time 3×3 basketball was played at Olympic games in Tokyo in 2020.

It is variant where only the half of court I used, and each team has only 3 players on court and one for substitution. Team that has first 21 point wins the game. Shot behind three-point line is for two points and basket inside is for 1 point. The ball has size 6.

NBA

NBA – National Basketball Association is a professional basketball league in North America. The league has 30 teams (29 from USA, and 1 from Canada – Toronto Raptors).

First season was played in years 1946/1947.

Teams are divided into 2 conferences and each conference in 3 divisions. Each team plays 82 games during regular season and then 10 best teams in each conference plays playoff, that has four rounds and in each round the team must win 4 games to advance to the next round. In the NBS finals best team from east conference face the best team from west conference. The winner is celled World Champion and get the trophy and each player get special ring.

Records NBA

Teams that have won most titles – 17 – are Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers.

Golden state Warriors hold record for most wins in regular season – in season 2015/2016 they won 73 of 82 games.

Bill Russel is the NBA player that has most titles – 11.

Most points in NBA scored Kareem Abdul-Jabbar – 38.387.

Phil Jackson is the NBA coach, who has most titles – he won 11 rings with Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers.

Greg Popovich, the coach of the team San Antonio Spurs, had won most NBA games and he is still active coach of the same team.

Euroleague

Best team completion in Europe is Euroleague. In this year it has 18 teams from whole Europe, when each team plays 2 times against each other (home x away) aned after that best 8 teams play playoff (1×8, 2×7, 3×6, 4×5). And four teams then play final tournament called Final four (semifinals, final, 3rd place game). Last two years won the title team from Turkey – Anadalo Efes Istanbul. In this year two Czech players play Euroleague in team FC Barcelona – Tomáš Satoranský and Jan Veselý.

This competition plays also woman team and Czech team USK Paraha is one of the best teams in recent history – they won title in 2015.

The Czech Republic

History of basketball in the Czech Republic is very old, because, as I said, first game of basketball was played in the year 1897. Interesting thing is, that it was at grammar school in my town Vysoké Mýto, where professor Karásek showed this game with his students.

Czech Republic was also one of 8 countries that founded FIBA organization in 1932.

Our best successes are:

Gold medal at European championship men 1946

6 silver a 5 bronze medals from European championship men (last medal 1985)

Silver medal at World championship woman 2010

Gold medal at European championship woman 2005

Silver medal at European championship woman 2003

Best players

The Czech Republic has five players than played in NBA

Jiří Zídek

Jiří Welsch

Jan Veselý

Tomáš Satoranský

Vít Krejčí – still plays – in this year in team Atlanta Hawks

Best players in the history of Czech basketaball are – Jiří Zídek senior, Stanislav Kropilák, Kamil Brabenec, Josef Jelínek.

In the year 1996 was Eva Němcová named as best European basketball woman player.

My favourite players

My favourite player is Luka Doncic form Slovenia. He now plays for Dallas Mavericks in the NBS. He is 24 years old, 2.0m height and his weight is 104 kg. He plays as point guard, but his play is very versatile, and he scores a lot of points and has many rebounds and assists and that is why he is my favourite player.

My Career

Basketball is very popular in our family. My both grandfathers played this sport for their whole life and my mother, and my father played basketball. And all of them were also basketball coaches and my father still coaches young players.

So, I also started to play basketball when I was 10 years old. At first, I attended basketball classes in our grammar school. After two year we started to play young regional competition in basketball club in my town Vysoké Mýto. Because we had not enough players in my age, I change club and I started to play in Litomyšl, which is 15 km far from my town. When I was 14, I played one year in Pardubice the best competition in the Czech Republic for payers under 15 years. This year I play U19 league for men in Litomyšl and East Bohemia regional league for adult in Vysoké Mýto.

I mostly play position 3 – small forward or 4 power forwards. I like to shoot 3 pointers.

I love this game.

Sports are one of the most popular leisure time activities. Sports help one to keep fit both physically, mentally and help take off some weight. During sports events one can meet a lot of new people. Almost every main city has sports facilities.

There are Indoor sports for example gymnastics, table tennis, boxing, wrestling etc. and outdoor sports are skiing (down-hill, cross-country, slalom, ski jump), sledding, hiking, rock climbing, horse riding, golf, and some aquatic sports such as rowing or windsurfing. We also have winter sports on ice or snow like skating and skiing or summer sports and all-season sports.

The games are usually all-season activities, and they are practised both indoors and outdoors. The most numerous groups of games are the ball games. In other states there are individual games.

Sport in USA

The four famous professional games there are American football, baseball, basketball, and ice-hockey. American football differs from European football mainly in the shape of the ball. The ball has an oval shape.

Sport in Czech Republic

In our country ball games rank among the most popular ones. They especially include football, volleyball, basketball, handball, and tennis. Ice-hockey is played at a very high level here too. We have many sportsmen who made us famous.

Sport in Britain

The British are sports lovers, and when they are neither playing nor watching games, they like to talk about them. England was also the first home of many popular modern games. In Britain there are a great number of clubs. Football is the most important thing for Britain. The other most popular sports in Britain are golf, badminton, rugby, cricket and tennis.

Olympic Games

Olympic Games continuous in tradition from the ancient Olympic Games that were the most important, largest, and oldest of games

The Olympic Games have existed for about a hundred years. The programme of the games was: running disciplines, hammer throwing, ball games, fencing and wrestling events. Even women were allowed to compete in some disciplines. Today it takes place every four years. There are two parts to the games – the winter part and the summer part – which alternate one every two years. The Olympic flag contains five interconnected rings of blue, yellow, black, green, and red colour on a white field. To signify the beginning of the Games is used the Olympic Flame from the site of the Ancient Olympics in Olympia, Greece.

The modern Olympic Games including sports like alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, ice hockey, skeleton, ski jumping, snowboards, speed skating, archery, athletics, badminton, volleyball, cycling, diving, handball, hockey, judo, swimming, trampoline, wrestling and others.

The most successful Czechs in the Olympic Games were, for example, Kateřina Neumannová who won the bronze medal.

Ester Ledecká won the gold in two different disciplines (alpine skiing and snowboarding) in Pyeongchang.

Emil Zátopek is the only Olympic athlete, who won three gold medals in long-distance running events at the same Olympic Games in Helsinki.

The Paralympic Games are the competitions for athletes with physical disabilities. In the Paralympic Games was successful, for example Eva Lemezová which won gold medal in Alpine skiing. The other famous competition is the Goodwill Games.

The first Goodwill Games are held every four years. Another famous game is the World Student Games. The first International University games were held in Warsaw. Ten games are usually included at these Summer Games as football, athletics, basketball, fencing, gymnastics, judo, swimming, tennis, volleyball, and water-polo.
The post Sport, games and free time – maturitní otázka first appeared on Anglictina-maturita.cz.
