In hospitals and nursing homes, diets for the elderly are carefully planned to meet their specific nutritional needs and medical conditions.
Common types of diets served
Regular diet
- A balanced diet that includes a variety of foods from all food groups. For patients without dietary restrictions to make sure they receive adequate nutrition.
Soft diet
- Foods that are easy to chew and swallow, such as cooked vegetables, soft fruits, tender meats and soft grains. For patients with dental problems, difficulty chewing or swallowing.
Pureed Diet
- Foods blended to a smooth, pudding-like consistency. For patients with problems swallowing or at risk of aspiration.
Therapeutic diets are designed to treat specific medical conditions
Diabetic Diet
- Low in simple sugars, balanced carbohydrates, with controlled portions. To manage blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes.
Heart healthy diet
- Low in fat, cholesterol, and sodium; high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. To support cardiovascular health and prevent heart disease.
High calorie/high protein diet
- Includes nutrient-dense foods that provide more calories and protein per serving. For patients with increased energy needs, such as those recovering from surgery or illness, or those with malnutrition.
Low fat diet
- Limits total fat intake. For patients with gallbladder disease, pancreatitis or certain cardiovascular conditions.
Gluten-free diet
- Eliminates all sources of gluten found in wheat, barley and rye. For patients with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.
- These diets help elderly people get the right food they need for their health. Dietitians and healthcare workers make special plans to fit each person’s needs and likes.
