Challenges

Mental Health:

The pressure to succeed academically and socially can contribute to mental health challenges.

Economic Uncertainty:

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated these issues, leading to concerns about future career prospects.

Social Issues:

Young people are increasingly aware of and engaged in social issues such as climate change, racial equality, and gender rights.

They often participate in activism and advocacy to promote positive change.

Online Communities:

Online communities provide a sense of belonging and support. Young people can connect with others who share similar interests and experiences.

Charles Dickens was one of the greatest novelists of the Victorian era. His works are still widely read and loved today. Let’s look at his life and his most important works.

Life of Charles Dickens

Born on February 7, 1812, in Portsmouth, England.

Dickens had a difficult childhood. His father, John Dickens, worked as a clerk but often struggled with debt. In 1824, John was sent to a debtors‘ prison, and 12-year-old Charles had to leave school to work in a blacking factory, labeling bottles to support his family.

This experience left a deep mark on Dickens and influenced his later writings, which often highlighted social injustices and the plight of the poor.

After his father was released from prison, Dickens returned to school for a short time but left again at age 15 to work as an office boy at a law firm. He later became a reporter covering parliamentary debates and gained a reputation for his sharp observations and vivid descriptions.

Dickens’s first book, „The Pickwick Papers,“ was published in 1836 and became very popular. This success allowed him to focus on writing full-time.

He married Catherine Hogarth in 1836, and they had ten children. However, their marriage was not happy, and they separated in 1858.

Dickens was known for his energetic public readings of his works, which were very popular and added to his fame.

He was also involved in various social causes, including education reform and children’s rights.

Dickens died on June 9, 1870, from a stroke and was buried in Westminster Abbey.

Major Works of Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens wrote many novels, novellas, and short stories that are still widely read today. His works often addressed social issues and featured memorable characters. Here are some of his most significant works:

Oliver Twist

The story of a young orphan, Oliver, who faces many hardships in London.

Themes: Poverty, child labor, and the criminal underworld.

A Christmas Carol

The story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miser who learns the true meaning of Christmas after being visited by three ghosts.

Themes: Redemption, compassion, and the spirit of Christmas.

David Copperfield

A semi-autobiographical novel about the life of David Copperfield, from his unhappy childhood to his success as a writer.

Themes: Personal growth, resilience, and the importance of kindness.

A Tale of Two Cities

Set during the French Revolution, it tells the story of Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton.

People live in society with other people. There are many rules in the society. If people keep them, they will live in peace together.

We learn the rules all our life. Our parents teach us many principles. Children pick up moral rules by observing their parents, teachers, and friends. If parents speak rudely, children will imitate them. If parents have only TV dinners, children will not know how to behave at the table.

Ethics is the study of moral. We must difference between good and bad – right/wrong. Children learn what is moral an immoral in families and at schools.

In modern society many children are educated by the media. Movies, reality shows influence them very much. The games and music are often rude and aggressive. Only people who look good and have a lot of money are successful.

Greetings

Can be formal or informal. Greetings are the beginnings of conversations. It is important to use a right greeting in different situations.

Younger people greet the older first, man greets woman first, children always greet adults first.

In Britain people do not usually touch each other when greeting.

In many countries, in Czechia too, people shake hands.

I China and Japan people greet each other by bowing.

In France and Spain people give one another a kiss on the cheeks.

In Czechia we take off our shoes when we are entering someone’s home.

Conversation

Helps people to know each other better.

Many conversations start with PLEASE and finish with THANK YOU

Problems

There are many problems in the society. The biggest problems are alcoholism, vandalism, drugs, unemployment, and illnesses.

Social problems are typical for the whole society.

Crime

Everybody must know what their rights and duties are. Everyone who lives in a society must keep the rules of the society. If anybody doesn’t and they are a danger to society, they can be locked up.

Přidal(a): marketa

There are a lot of global issues in our world. For example coronavirus. I think this disease has changed our lives a lot. Covid 19 also affected quarantine, which was very difficult because we didn’t go to school the whole last year and we also couldn’t go to restaurants or cinemas. Every business was closed because of the pandemic.

The next global problem is war. In our area were just two big wars, but in other countries are much more wars. In my opinion, wars are the worst problem because they influence lots of other problems. For example, there can be killed innocent people, many buildings are damaged and lots of people have to leave their houses or they suffer poverty.

There is also a lot of crime like murder, robbery, smuggling and dealing drugs and rape. When somebody commits a crime, he gives punishment. For example, when somebody killed someone, he goes to prison for several years or for his whole life. I think that the punishment for rape is very low. A lot of people that commit rape just get a condition.

And the next problem I mention is terrorism. It is usually related to politics or religion. The most famous terrorist attack was on the 11th of September 2001. The attack was on the World Trade Centre in New York. There were a lot of people at that moment, so there were many killed people. We watched a document about that day and there were people jumping out of the windows. And people say that this was the day that changed everything.

Unfortunately, there are also a lot of diseases in our world. The biggest problem in the last few days is definitely covid. Around 10 thousand new people are infected every day. I think that everything will be closed like last year. The flu is also very dangerous in this part of the year.

I would like to say something about counties. The most important are definitely China, Germany, Great Britain, France, Japan, USA and maybe Russian. Russian is the biggest country in the world. Every country has a different culture. For example, the Chinese eat with chops. The religions are also different in every country. I know Christianity, Muslims, Buddhism and Hinduism.

Some countries are cooperating in organizations like the EU and NATO. The Czech Republic is a member of these two.

And my last point is are famous people. For example, the American president is one of the most important person in the world, because he can influence the economic or industry.
The post Man and Society – maturitní otázka first appeared on Anglictina-maturita.cz.

Otázka: Personal identification and characteristics

Jazyk: Angličtina

Přidal(a): Natálie V.

Me and my friends:

I would describe myself as a friendly, kind, quite shy girl. I am quite moody. My friends are very similar to me. They are all very friendly, adventurous, kind, talkative, usually very funny but also serious when I need to discuss something seriously. My friend Lenka is a friendly kind girl. She is thin, has curly brown hair and she smiles all the time! Lenka also has a tattoo. My friend Hanka is thin, she has blonde straight hair and blue eyes. My friend Nina is thin and she has long, brown hair and brown eyes. She likes to have colourful nails and she wears glasses or contact lenses.

My behaviour:

I would like to be more confident when I’m speaking to many people. As I am very shy, I speak too quietly and it doesn’t look very professional. I would also love to procrastinate less-my giant problem is that I can’t concentrate for a long time in a row. That is really frustrating when you have to study for a long time in a row-for example before matura… on the other hand, I must say that I am very well organised all the time. I have my diary where I keep all the things I have to do, and I’m very good at creating all the projects, writing essays and creating study materials-I even enjoy it-but I hate studying it afterwards. I would love to be better in using the time better.

My hobbies and interests:

My main hobby is my dog. I walk him many times a day, I train him everyday. We go on trips so that he could get to know other dogs and other places in the nature. Having a dog actually takes a lot of time. My other hobbies are art-I like to decor my diary. My other big hobby is sport-I play tennis, I ski a lot, I go to the gym with my dad few times a week, I love hiking in Giant Mountains during summer.

My feelings with my friends, family, boyfriend:

I feel very relaxed and happy with my friends. I know that I can tell them everything and my secrets will stay with them. So do I with my family. I have great relationships with all members in my family-my mum is my best friend, I do all the sports and fun activities with my dad and my brother. As a family, we also do many things together-such as family vacation or some trips. What I enjoy the most are the calm summer days on our garden. I’m lucky that I have a great boyfriend, i really trust him and I know that he will be there for me in the darkest times. This combined with loyalty is what I look for in a boyfriend.

My plans for the future:

After matura, I would like to go to the Charles University and study languages. I would love to spend as much time as I can with my dog, my family and friends. One day, I would love to have a small apartment with my boyfriend and live in Prague, close to my family and school. But these plans are all in the stars.
