  • centre: Domažlice
  • burghers: „Chodové“
  • region has 11 historic villages:

Upper Chodland:

  • Postřekov, Újezd, Klenčí pod Čerchovem, Chodov, Draženov

Lower Chodland:

  • Mrákov, Tlumačov, Pocinovice, Klíčov, Chodská Lhota, Stráž

 

History

Domažlice

  • the town was founded by Přemysl Otakar II
  • the first mention dates back from the 13th century

Chodové – the Chod people

  • they protected the borders in western side → they got 24 privileges
  • the direct subjects of the king
  • Chodové were also in today’s district of Tachov, Šumava and Český les
  • they lost their privileges under the reign of V. M. Lamminger („Lomikar“)
  • the leader of the Chod rebellion → Jan Sladký Kozina (he fought for the rights and privileges of Chods)
  • 1695: Jan Sladký Kozina was executed (in Pilsen) by Lomikar

Regional dishes

Chod pie

  • traditional and the most famous dessert
  • mainly made of flour, sugar, poppy, plums, curd, almonds
  • it is sold mainly at the Chodské slavnosti

Toč

  • simple dish
  • made of potatoes and flour
  • served with buttermilk

Monzeble

  • dish from Mrákov
  • the base is a pancake dough

 

Typical Chod costume

  • our costumes are here about 150 years
  • it has a lot of colours and lots of flowers embroidery on it.
  • we have different costumes for men and for women,
    both of them have specific parts

 

Typical traditional festivities

  • our typical festival called „Chodské slavnosti“
  • It takes place in Domažlice in August, this event lasts for 2-3 days
  • this festival is interesting for many tourists and the biggest folk festival in Europe
  • last year there were about 150 000 visitors here

 

Interesting places to visit

Domažlická věž – the tower

  • stands in the town centre
  • the tower is 56 metres high and it is slanting from the vertical axe in 59 cms, there are 194 stairs to the top of it

Chod castle

  • situated in the upper half of the square
  • there is a museum with Chod costumes, dishes and many other exhibitions in interior

Baldov

  • it‘s local outlook, where you can have a beautiful view of the whole town with its surroundings
  • there is a monument reminding the Hussites victory at the battle nearby Domažlice
