New Year’s Day – January 1^st

St Valentine’s Day – February 14^th = lovers day (people send Valentine cards – not signed + exchange gifts)

All Fools’ Day – April 1^st people play jokes and tricks

 

Easter – after 1^st full moon in spring=> marks the crucifixion and resurection of Christ

• Good Friday(not cross buns), Easter Sunday, Easter Monday

 

May Day – May 1^st a celebration of  the coming of spring

Mother’s Day – 2^nd Sunday in May – it honours all mothers

Father’s Day – 3^rd Sunday in June – it honours all fathers

 

Halloween – 31^st October = the Eve of All Saints’ Day

• Parties(costumes, masks), they cut horrible faces in pumpkins and put candle inside, they play games for fun, children play ,,TRICK OR TREAT,,

 

Guy Fawkes Day – 5^th November

• Commemorates the unsuccessful plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605 – there are bonfires, fireworks

 

Christmas – Christmas Eve – December 24^th

Christmas Day – December 25^th presents in the morning, Christmas dinner: roast turkey+ stuffing+ roast potatoes,

New Year’s Eve – December 31^st

AMERICAN

Independence Day – July 4^th

• Commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Indepencence (4.7.1776 )
• => establishing the USA
• There are parades, concerts, speeches, picnics, competitions, fireworks

 

Columbus Day – October 12^th

• The unniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus in 1492

 

Thanksgiving Day – 4^th Thursday in November

• First celebrated in 1621 by the Pilgrim Fathers who survived the hard winter of 1620 – 21
• In summer they have rich harvest and thanked to the Lord
• Now families gather together a they have : roast turkey +dressing+cranberry sauce+ sweet potatoes+ pumpkin pie
