In the United Kingdom, many senior schools had school dances or balls, which from the 1970s were most often called a “school disco”. School discos were semi-formal events held at various times of the year, often in the Christmas period. Many schools had a summer ball to celebrate the end of term, but this did not have any of the cultural or social significance of the US prom.
